Gams and Grandma

Once upon a time a tall, Harvard smarty met a sprightly, young flower child. They courted and were mawwied and look!

They produced some relatively tall children. Wooo hoo! My mom always says her crowning achievement was that Chris and I were lanky. You can't tell from this picture, but my sweet Grandma Claire is no tall drink of water. And although I never met him, my mom's dad was rather petite as well. But don't forget about my sister Bekah! She is quite the oddball of the family. Literally. And she is the fair-skinned, blue-eyed, super short one. Part of her shortness could stem from her mental handicap, but I thinnnnnk she just got the short genes.

Not to mention the cute genes. I could eat her with a spoon!

Michael and I went to Richmond on Sunday to hang with my aunt and cousins and surprise my grandma for mother's day! We had to be careful... she is almost 90 years old and I did not want to give her a heart attack. She also can't see very well unless you are right up close to her, but as my cousin Tommy pointed out, "It's not like she won't know your voice, Carey Beth."

Maybe. And a big agenda. Watch out!

Anyway, we had a great afternoon with my family, and Grandma was so cute and so surprised and she is such a gem. We had steak and strawberry shortcake, which are two of her favorite things. I had the opportunity last fall to be with my grandma for a few days while she had a health scare and needed someone to be with her at the hospital. I learned quite a bit about her, and had an epiphany when I realized that our dietary needs are quite similar. I am so laid back very particular about my food, namely that if you can't taste it, WHY EAT IT?? Lo and behold, Grandma Claire feels the same way. I am not kidding when I say that you did NOT want to be the lady who brought the salt-free mashed potatoes to my grandmother while she was in the hospital. Look out! Call maintenance! Potatoes anywhere but in her mouth. But, she loves her dessert, just like me. Anything chocolate is good. And strawberry shortcake will also do the trick.

Leftovers from the berry farm = a good snack on the drive back to DC.

Grandma Claire was so happy that we came to visit that she took me shopping for some new wheels.

I am now the proud owner of a FIAT!

And now I will tell you...

It's not true.

Totally not true. I did get to sit in one on Saturday though. We went to European Embassy Day! One day a year, all the European embassies open their doors to the public to visit and get a taste of their culture. Michael and I only had time to visit three of them, but trust me, I sat in my Fiat at the Italian embassy and thought, "Well. I could fit my Cabbage Patch kid in the back seat. Not much else." Are you taking notes?

The man himself:

It was a great weekend. Hanging with my man, Winston, and grandma was the best. Well, my mom is totally the best, but since my she lives a wee bit away, then her mom is the next best thang on mother's day!
