Black Eyed Susan

When I was born, I had almost completely black eyes. So black that it was hard to tell a difference between the pupil and the iris. My Grandma Jane called me her "Black Eyed Susan" after the flowers with black centers and yellow petals. My mom has always said that I was "born under a sunny moon," meaning I'm (generally) a pretty happy lady. While strolling through the Duke University gardens a few weeks ago, the one little plant sign that my eyes fell upon was the label identifying Black Eyed Susans!

And look, they are members of the sunflower family. It made me so happy. Small wonder, since I was born under a sunny moon.
